May’s LP Focus

May 2014 – This month Pre-K and Level 1 classes focus on the mechanics of writing.  For a number of reasons, writing is often a particular challenge for students with Down syndrome.  Building hand strength, proper posture, and a good choice of writing implements can help with learning.  Our favorite writing program remains Handwriting Without Tears.  Upper level Learning Program classes this month focus on writing for success.  What tools can your learner use to help “get their thoughts out?”  How do you capture stories when writing them down is difficult?  What alternatives are available until writing is more reliable?  With the proper strategies in place, your learner can feel successful in writing efforts as they work towards writing independence.
